ALL THOSE SIXTIES POP GROUPS AND STARS

I am always amazed when my husband, John Callaghan, tells me of all the sixties pop groups and stars who appeared at the Auchinleck Community Centre.  These included The Springfields (including Dusty), Danny Williams (Moon River), The Applejacks, The Hollies, The Tremeloes, Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers andThe Undertakers.  There are many more, as when we are listening to the sixties music he will often say I have seen these at Auchinleck Community Centre.  Although I lived not far from the city of Leeds in Yorkshire, we never got the opportunity to see so many of the popular groups of the time, let alone the ones which became famous.

William Beevers says

The groups were booked by my great uncle,Geordie Young and they ran buses every week from Glasgow and other places,it was very popular and the groups mentioned are just a few of many, they'd be on Top of the Pops or Thank your lucky stars and Auchinleck community centre at the same time,I'm too young to remember but my uncles saw them all.Happy Days!

Adam Glass says

I recall seeing Johnny Duncan in the mid 50's at Auchinleck Community Centre, he was from mining stock, he had a streaming cold when at Auchinleck. In the book "Blue Suede Brogans by Jimmy Wilkie it is written the mining Communities were creative places musically and back then rock  was not always acceptable. Bands booked themselves into halls such as Dalmellington and Auchinleck, the Bobby Jones in Ayr is also mentioned as a venue with a 20 to 25 piece band. The Bobby Jones had a resident band but used to include a rock bands section, sometimes locals such as The Merry Macs. I remember them from Cumnock Town Hall. “The website Rocking Scots, Ayrshire Bands of the 50s and 60s” contains a good photo of the Merry Macs and band members names. I did not wish to breach copyright by posting it.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
