Auchinleck Talbot’s Scottish Cup run may have come to an end in defeat to Hearts on Saturday, but not before our side came agonisingly close to creating one of the competition’s biggest ever upsets.
Roared on by over 3,000 fans in a crowd of nearly 9,000, Auchinleck gave the travelling support a day to remember, and came within six minutes of bringing the SPL side back to Ayrshire for a replay.
Talbot keeper Andy Leishman was just one of the team’s many, many heroes, and saved Fraser Mullen’s penalty in the 18th minute, after Gordon Pope tripped Arvydas Novikovas.
Leishman produced a string of excellent saves, marshalling a solid performance from the whole team in keeping the SPL side out, as the home fans grew more frustrated and Talbot grew in confidence.
The only goal of the game came in the 84th minute after Leishman collided with defender Bryan Slavin, and the ball ran free for Gordon Smith to score a fortunate winner.
Even then the drama wasn’t over, as Gordon Pope had the ball in the net in the fifth of eight added minutes, only to see the linesman’s flag go up in an, at best, very tight offside decision which preserved Hearts’ advantage.
