Auchinleck pupils get arty for health with new mural
7 DecemberPupils at Auchinleck Academy are getting arty… and their talent has gone on display for all to see.
A group of third year pupils recently created a huge, colourful mural for the school dining hall as part of a health & wellbeing / art project.
Budding young artists Emily Robinson, Eve Parker, Gemma Smith, Claire Corrigan, Lana Medhurst and Sophie Reid wanted to get across a healthy eating message. They came up with the slogan ‘A Healthy Lunch packs a Healthy Punch’ for the centre of their artwork.
The pupils sketched out ideas to show fruit and vegetables cascading from a basket, using a combination of realistic and cartoon styles to create interesting images and to balance the composition.
Measuring eight feet square and made up of acrylic paint on MDF panels, the mural took six weeks to complete, with pupils and teachers often working after school.
Headteacher Peter Gilchrist said: “The six artists had never worked on this kind of scale before and they responded very well to this big creative challenge.
“The mural has really helped to create a better environment for pupils who take packed lunches in Auchinleck Academy and has boosted the confidence of our art pupils who created the work”.
The young art team said they loved designing the mural and watching their ideas come to life as they painted and hoped it would inspire people to eat more healthily. They enjoyed being given the responsibility and being able to create something special for the school.
Supported by a thriving art department, other artistic pupils competed in a recent mask competition in the school and even gave up their lunchtimes to work on some amazing mask designs. Winners were Katie Allaun , Nikki Collins and Martin McLelland, who designed their own masks during lunch breaks.
Congratulations to the artistic pupils! Post your comments and have your say here on s1auchinleck
