Auchinleck's Anderson denied as Harlow grinds out victory

  • Greg Harlow can barely look on as Stewart Anderson prepares to deliver a bowl in the World Indoor Championship final 24/01/2010.
Update: The Cumnock Chronicle has an interview with Stewart this week, saying he returned home "delighted" after a fantastic performance.

From The Herald Monday 25/10/2010.

Greg Harlow denied Stewart Anderson a place in the record books as the first unseeded player to take the World Indoor Singles crown when he defeated the Scot 9-8, 10-3 in the final at Potters Leisure Resort near Great Yarmouth over the weekend.

The first set could have gone either way with Anderson battling back from 4-8 down after seven ends to pickup the pace at 8-8 playing the last of the eleven-end set, and despite connecting with Harlow's shot bowl with his final delivery, his bow tipped outwards and he lost the vital single.

The second set continued to be a match of two jack lengths, with Harlow dictating at a short length and Anderson at his favoured long length. The set was all square at 3-3 after the sixth end, but Harlow got his nose in front on the seventh with a double and followed that up with a treble when an Anderson running bowl failed to cut the count against him. Harlow went on to the secure the title with an end to spare and stand alongside Paul Foster as the only players to hold a full set of WBT titles. "I had a match plan, and it virtually went the way I wanted," said the new champion after winning the £28,000 first prize purse.

"Basically, I just managed to alter the jack length subtly from end to end. I knew I just couldn't let him settle. Stewart has been sensational thoughout the championships and was deadly on the draw.

"It wasn't a spectacular match but I was just grinding and grinding away. My running bowls were spot on, too. You could say everything went to plan.

"Without a doubt, this is the highlight of my career - this is what I've been aiming for since I was a boy."

Harlow now moves up the rankings to become the provisional world No.1, only one point ahead of Scotland's Foster with only the Welsh Masters event to be decided next month.

A disappointed Anderson said: "My first two bowls let me down, and I didn't put Greg under any pressure.

"Of course I'm delighted with my achievements, but in all honesty I just feel drained. It's been a momentous three weeks for me."

Anderson, from Auchinleck in Ayrshire, the home club of Hugh Duff, who won the title in 1988 and 1997, had been a revelation, taming five-times champion Alex Marshall in the third round, and reaching the final with wins over John Price and Nick Brett.

A pre-tournament 40-1 outsider, Anderson, the WIBC world under-25 champion, was elevated to favourite even before he toppled Marshall, and was clearly inspired by his blossoming relationship with Kerry Packwood, the WIBC world under-25 women's champion from Wales. Anderson said meeting Kerry, and having her to talk to during the tournament has made a big difference. He is planning to move to Wales so they can be together.

Well done Stewart, we're very proud of you!
