Auchinleck Academy’s young basketball stars scooped the title at the East Ayrshire LEAD2014 challenge, held to celebrate the lead-up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Auchinleck defeated Stewarton Academy 8-2 in the final, having defeated St. Joseph’s in a shootout in the first semi-final and Stewarton defeated Loudoun in the other semi final.

Budding young athletes from schools all over East Ayrshire recently hooped it up at a basketball festival designed to find the champs.

Competitors from nine secondary schools battled it out in the LEAD 2014 S1 basketball challenge last week at James Hamilton Academy, Kilmarnock Young players from all schools’ winning inter-house competition teams were invited to take part.

The Council’s Active Schools team ran the festival with help from adiStars - young pupil ambassadors – who kept scores and refereed games

Active Schools Coordinator Gordon Cunningham said: “LEAD 2014 is all about young leaders organising and running sports events in the build up to Glasgow 2014, in order to raise awareness of this major sporting event, which will soon be coming to Scotland”.
