Enterprising Alan wins £500 for Auchinleck Academy
An enterprising Auchinleck Academy pupil secured a £500 grant for his school from a well-known Auchinleck garage business.
Students from Auchinleck, as well as from Cumnock Academy, pitched ideas to Bridgend Garage suggesting how the cash award could be used to support the work of their schools.
Alan Haynes’ successful bid, drawn from a total of 150, will buy extra sports equipment for Auchinleck’s PE department.
Meanwhile, Cumnock’s Lucas Bunten’s winning entry will see his school’s music department benefit from new bass guitars this session.
Both lucky lads also won themselves netbooks for their efforts.
The Bridgend Garage Secondary School Grant was devised to encourage pupils to take an active interest in their school by applying for a grant and deciding what it should be used for.
Owners Jean and Tom Allardyce said: “We were impressed by the many great ideas from the young people of Cumnock and Auchinleck Academies and we would like to thank every pupil who took the time and effort to submit an entry to the competition.”
Peter Gilchrist, head teacher at Auchinleck Academy, congratulated Alan.
He said: “The new equipment will be very useful in supporting our progress in fitness and health promotion.”
Cumnock Academy’s head teacher, Angus McVake, said: “Congratulations to Lucas on his winning idea.
“This will benefit many of our budding young musicians in Cumnock Academy.”
Both head teachers also thanked Mr and Mrs Allardyce for their generosity.
Councillor Jim Roberts, spokesman for Lifelong Learning, said: “This was a great idea from Tom and Jean Allardyce to support the young people’s education and to encourage them to get involved in the decision-making process.
“This is indicative of the strong support schools across East Ayrshire receive from their local communities.”
