Scottish final disappointment for Auchinleck Talbot
28 May, 2012Auchinleck Talbot suffered a rare Scottish Junior Cup final disappointment on Sunday, as they went down to a shock 2-1 defeat to Shotts Bon Accord.
In a match played on one of the hottest days of the year at Livingston, thousands travelled from Auchinleck hoping to see Talbot lift the famous trophy for a record tenth time.
But the Talbot fans were to be disappointed as the Super League First Division side upset the odds by beating the holders and favourites.
Shotts took the lead after just ten minutes when Stefan McCluskey picked up a loose ball in the box to score, and just three minutes later John Boyack made it 2-0, touching the ball in from a corner.
Auchinleck spent the remainder of the game pressing to get back in the match, but couldn’t make a breakthrough until the 88th minute, when Kyle Faulds picked up a rebound from the Shotts keeper and fired home to make it 2-1.
Even with time running out Auchinleck could still have forced extra-time when Bryan Young was put clear after a neat passing move – but his stoppage-time shot went high over the bar, and Shotts held on to lift the trophy for the first time in 54 years.
