Writer's attack on Auchinleck

  • A view of Auchinleck taken by s1auchinleck reader Bill Anderson

An astonishing attack on Auchinleck has been launched in The Scotsman today.

In a week in which the town has not had its troubles to seek, writer Kenneth Roy wrote: "In the Scottish litany of defeated places, Auchinleck is perhaps the most depressing. It is not possible to pass through it without wondering whether the mean little shops and pubs are open or closed, how the people survive the everlasting Sunday, and why there are not more of them running naked down the endless main street, screaming in despair."

Mr Roy is the editor of the Kilmarnock-based Scottish Review. You can read his piece both in The Scotsman's website and in slightly longer form on the Scottish Review's website.

Hello

I don't live in Auchinleck. Heck, I don't even live in Scotland. But if Auchinleck is 'defeated', I would respectfully suggest Mr Roy needs to get out a bit more. Very little graffiti, very little garbage or litter in the streets, a quiet village set in a rolling green countrside, at least some residents involved and trying to make a difference. You could be doing considerably worse.

Of course there are the usual problems with the youth. But they are going to be sullen, aggressive and unpleasant regardless  so never mind them. Ship 'em off to Glasgow. Perhaps a bit of time in a big city would  generate a touch of appreciation for the friendliness and sense of belonging to be found in Auchinleck and other small villages like it. If Mr Roy is not switched on enough to appreciate the pleasures of life in a small town, perhaps he too should try living in a major urban centre, where he could run through the streets, naked and screaming, to his hearts content.

Regards from Canada.

Perhaps Mr Roy is of such gentle disposition wearing only  gloomy spectacles as he hurries through the village he sees exactly what he wants to see....rather than (heavens forbid!) take the time to check out some of the changes that have been happeningand  the warm welcome that would await him in the shops..he is the one stuck in his own gloomy past and outlook! www.auchinleckfestival.co.uk
